About East Lothian Housing Association and R3

Based in the beautiful market town of Haddington, we are an innovative and modern housing association with over 1,400 homes and an exciting and active development programme to make sure we continue to grow.

We are a leading organisation in the sector, exemplified by our digital service delivery, with 88% of our tenants using their digital My Home accounts, and 86% completely paper-free.

R3 is our commercial maintenance company, a subsidiary company wholly owned by ELHA, providing services to housing associations, home-owners and businesses large and small.  Born in the cloud in 2011, R3 has been digital since day one.

We are looking for our new Director to lead R3, alongside our Asset Management team.  Despite being a .com company, we employ lots of friendly humans, and our office is open and welcoming for tenants to visit every weekday.  We are flexible and accommodating towards home working, but we also place importance on staff being in the office and meeting one another too, so we expect at least 60% of your working week to be spent with colleagues in the workplace.

Despite where we are, we’re still a long way from where we want to be.  This is a perfect time to join a healthy, happy and confident staff team, to help us truly spread our digital wings, and to help us maintain our position as a beacon for exceptional service delivery in the maintenance and affordable housing worlds.

The Job

A key member of our Senior Management Team, our Director of R3 and Asset Management ensures we identify the investment we need to make to manage and maintain our homes, and through R3, helps us deliver that.  But R3 has many more customers than just ELHA, so a main focus of the role is to manage our all-trades maintenance company, and develop our distinctive R3, R3 Direct and R3 Commercial brands (and potentially develop some new ones too).

This means you need a good understanding of the housing association environment, but you also need to be familiar with competitive tendering to win new contracts, know how to manage a diverse manual workforce, experienced in providing excellent customer service, and driven to create appropriate profit margins in all areas of our business.

About You

You will have the business acumen to be responsible for running a commercial maintenance business, whilst operating within a regulated parent housing association environment.  This means a commercial head with a social heart is required for this unique role.

We expect you to be educated to degree level (or equivalent) in a relevant technical or building discipline.  It is also desirable that you have a relevant Professional Qualification (for example: RICS, RIAS, CIOB), whilst a full driver’s licence is essential.

You will be an experienced, committed and resilient senior leader in a technical, maintenance, development or regeneration focused service or company, who can motivate our team and think strategically.  You need to be capable of working with Boards and Committees at a senior level and to have knowledge and understanding of the social housing environment (although direct housing association experience is not essential).
