Working at the very heart of the health service, NHS National Services Scotland deliver services critical to frontline patient care and in support of the efficient and effective operation of NHS Scotland.  A major division within the NHS National Services Scotland, the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS) plays a vital role not only in the health of the people of Scotland but also on an international scale – through our leading position in new product development, biomedical research and donor services.  Our goal is to maintain the highest standards to patient care whilst remaining internationally competitive and the post should be expected to support the Better Blood Transfusion Programme.

The duties of the post are to support the provision of transfusion medicine laboratory and clinical services to hospitals within the catchment area of the regional centre.  In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to national issues within SNBTS through the patient services Directorate. National roles would also be available to suitably experienced individuals including some Blood Donor sessions in support of the Donor Consultant, sessions in support of the Tissue Consultant and also a clinical advisory role in Components.

There is a required commitment to the on-call rota, which will be 1 in 4 with prospective cover including weekends. There is work ongoing to move to a 1:8 commitment nationally.

This post is offered under the terms of the new consultant contract and as such the job plan is available for consideration.  The successful applicant will be expected to participate in the job planning process and will be subject to review at least annually.  The successful applicant will also be expected to participate in the consultant appraisal system

Applicants must be registered medical practitioners who are included on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council or within three months of completing CCT qualification.
