Commercial Director
Cardiff University
Aspen People partnered with Cardiff University to recruit a Commercial Director.
Cardiff University is one of Wales’s leading universities, established in 1883 as a founding college of the University of Wales. Guided by its values of truth, unity and concord, the University has a long-standing commitment to making a positive and lasting difference to communities through outstanding education, world-leading research and an exceptional student experience.
At the time of recruitment, Cardiff University was progressing an ambitious estates and campus transformation programme focused on sustainability, innovation and long-term financial resilience. This included significant investment across its estate portfolio, alongside major residential and commercial development plans designed to support the University’s future ambitions.
The Commercial Director played a key role in shaping and delivering the University’s estates and campus services transformation. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and working closely with senior leaders across Estates and Campus Services, the role provided strategic leadership for commercial development initiatives, major investment projects and complex financing arrangements.
The successful candidate led the development of commercial opportunities across the University’s estate, supporting large-scale residential and infrastructure projects while ensuring investments were financially sustainable, strategically aligned and capable of delivering long-term value. The role combined commercial strategy, financial modelling, funding negotiations, governance and stakeholder engagement to strengthen the University’s estate portfolio and support its academic mission.
The appointment sought an experienced senior leader with a strong background in estates management, commercial development and complex transformation environments. The successful candidate brought expertise in commercial financing, financial modelling and negotiating funding agreements, alongside a proven track record of delivering large-scale projects. Strong communication skills, collaborative leadership and an understanding of governance, regulation and sustainability were essential.
This recruitment campaign has now closed and the position has been successfully appointed. The role is featured here as an example of the senior leadership appointments Aspen People has delivered in partnership with our clients.
