Salary: £52,119, VHS Grade 5, with generous benefits


Established in 2004, Voluntary Health Scotland (VHS)  is Scotland’s national intermediary for voluntary health organisations of all sizes, committed to building a healthier, fairer Scotland through a thriving voluntary health sector. As a registered charity and company limited by guarantee, VHS collaborates with its small, dedicated team, working with members to address health inequalities, improve policies, and enhance well-being in Scotland. Although a small team, VHS has grown in strength over the years and has great scope for continued growth and impact across Scotland.

VHS focuses on four key areas:

  • Collaboration and Networking: Promoting integrated solutions and partnerships between the voluntary and statutory sectors to reduce health inequalities.
  • Promotion and Advocacy: Amplifying the voice of the voluntary health sector, sharing expertise and evidence about its contribution to health outcomes.
  • Leadership and Influence: Connecting with decision-makers to shape national health policy and supporting members in advocating for change.
  • Knowledge into Action: Raising awareness of health priorities and providing information and learning opportunities.

VHS’ Chief Executive, Claire Stevens, is retiring at the end of March 2024, after a highly successful period of 12 years leading VHS. Under Claire’s leadership, VHS’ reputation has grown as a highly influential national intermediary for the voluntary health sector across Scotland. VHS are now searching for their next Chief Executive; and seek a passionate and ambitious leader to work closely with their dynamic Board of Trustees, to nurture a high-performing team, and to drive strategic growth for VHS in the next stage of its history.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Delivering current and future Strategic Plans, driving growth, and sustainability.
  • Leadership and Motivation: Motivating and developing a resilient team.
  • Relationship Building/External Communications: Serving as the spokesperson, influencing stakeholders.
  • Organisational and Financial Management: Ensuring effective governance, compliance, and financial oversight.
  • Governance/Support: Collaborating with Trustees for good governance and employment practices.


About the Person

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in leadership, experience fostering and inspiring a positive team environment, and strong communication skills. You should have previous experience working with a Board of Directors and financial acumen.

You should be passionate about what the voluntary health sector can achieve for people’s health and wellbeing, with strong relationship building and networking skills. The ideal candidate will have imagination, with the ability to look and guide the organisation forward strategically. You should understand how the Third Sector in Scotland operates.

Knowledge of the health policy landscape in Scotland and an active interest in engaging in this space would be advantageous.
