Audit & Risk Committee Lay Member

Cardiff University
Audit & Risk Committee Member
Non-remunerated

Cardiff University was established in 1883 as one of the founding colleges of the University of Wales. Our motto, Gwirionedd, Undod a Chytgord – ‘truth, unity and concord’ – sets out our commitment to working together to make a positive and lasting difference to our communities and continues to shape our institution today.

We are one of the largest universities in the UK and the only Welsh member of the Russell Group. Our vision is to be a world-leading, research-excellent, and educationally outstanding university with a transformative social, cultural and economic impact for Cardiff, Wales, the UK and the world.  We are firmly grounded in our sense of place. As the biggest university in Wales – and a major employer, with more than 7,000 staff – we work with communities, industry and government to help overcome the most urgent challenges of our times. Our widening participation and civic mission activity sees engagement from across the university community and makes a difference to a diverse range of people.

We are searching for a new External Member to join our Audit and Risk Management Committee, a pivotal body within our governing Council. This committee plays a crucial role in assessing and advising Council on the effectiveness of our risk management, control, and governance arrangements.

Your role will involve:

  • Monitoring the University’s risk management framework.
  • Providing oversight of risk management activities.
  • Monitoring financial reporting processes and compliance.
  • Assessing the performance of auditors (external and internal).
  • Overseeing the audit program.
  • You will work constructively, in a non-Executive capacity, alongside the University’s Chair of Audit and Risk Committee and the Chief Financial Officer to review the effectiveness of Cardiff University’s financial and internal control systems.

As an External Member, you will maintain independence from the University, as outlined in our Statement of Independence.

Cardiff University is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive culture. We encourage applications from individuals with a high level of personal skills and competence to ensure that we meet our potential and manage risk effectively, promoting economy, efficiency, and effectiveness.

The successful candidate will have experience in Higher Education as well as the ability to provide critical scrutiny of strategy, financial plans, risk management, and performance oversight by utilizing professional knowledge and experience, analyzing complex data and information, reaching informed judgments, and employing effective communication and interpersonal skills.

We are dedicated to supporting equality and diversity, and we welcome applicants from all backgrounds, regardless of sex, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, trans identity, relationship status, religion or belief, caring responsibilities, socio-economic status, and age.

In return, this stimulating and rewarding role offers successful candidates new challenges, continued professional development, and the opportunity to make a difference in one of the UK’s leading educational institutions, helping to tackle the challenges of today and educating the leaders of tomorrow.

Terms of Office and Time Commitment:

As a member of our Audit and Risk Committee, you will contribute approximately six days per year. This includes attending meetings, typically held four times a year. Meetings are usually held virtually, within a 9 am to 5 pm timeframe, with at least one face-to-face or hybrid meeting each year. The term of office is for three years.

This position is non-remunerated, but reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed, and IT equipment can be provided.
