Disability Equality Scotland (or DES as it is also known) is a disabled people’s organisation working to make Scotland a more equal, inclusive and accessible place for all disabled people.
Founded over 20 years ago we have grown to be one of the largest and most influential disabled people’s organisations in Scotland.
We are a membership organisation and the umbrella organisation for access panels in Scotland giving us a reach of over 10,000 disabled people. We work with our members and access panels to promote inclusion and accessibility across Scotland.
We have 3 key principles which guide our work:
Positivity: Positive Approach. We are a solutions focused organisation. We want to hear what is working well and what is not working to approach the issues in a positive way.
Promotion: Promoting Equality. We are a proactive and media aware organisation. We look to promote good/best practice and achieve a greater awareness of disability equality and accessibility across Scotland.
Partnership: Partnership-focused. We are a collaborative organisation. We work with partners across all sectors to achieve real measurable change across Scotland with regard to access and equality. We are committed to the disabled people’s motto of “nothing about us without us”.
We are currently midway through our strategic plan which you can find linked here.
