World Menopause Day

World Menopause Day is held every year on the 18th of October. The purpose of the day is to raise awareness of the menopause and the support options available for improving health and wellbeing, we have decided to focus on the workplace.

How can menopause affect your career?

Menopause can potentially affect a person’s career in various ways. The physical and emotional symptoms associated with menopause, such as hot flashes, mood swings, and fatigue, can impact productivity and concentration levels. These symptoms may lead to difficulties in managing work-related stress and meeting job demands. Additionally, menopause can also bring about changes in sleep patterns, which can further contribute to decreased energy levels and overall performance at work.

Furthermore, menopause may affect a person’s confidence and self-esteem due to hormonal changes and body image concerns. This could potentially impact career progression and opportunities for advancement. It is important to note that the severity and impact of menopause symptoms can vary greatly among individuals.

To mitigate the effects of menopause on your career, it is advisable to prioritise self-care and seek support from healthcare professionals. Open communication with your employer or human resources department about your needs and any necessary workplace accommodations can also be beneficial. Additionally, exploring strategies such as stress management techniques, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and seeking social support can help navigate the challenges that menopause may present in the workplace.

How can workplaces help with menopause?

Workplaces can play a crucial role in supporting individuals experiencing menopause. Here are some ways in which we believe workplaces can help but this is by no means a comprehensive list:

  1. Education & Awareness: Employers can provide information and resources about menopause, its symptoms, and its potential impact on employees’ well-being and performance. This can help create a supportive and understanding work environment.
  2. Flexible Working: Offering flexible work options, such as flexible hours or remote work, can help individuals manage their symptoms and maintain a healthy work-life balance. This flexibility allows employees to adapt their schedules to accommodate any discomfort or fatigue associated with menopause.
  3. Workplace Policies: Employers can review and update policies to address the specific needs of employees going through menopause. This may include providing access to appropriate breaks, allowing for adjustments in dress code to accommodate temperature fluctuations, and offering support for managing symptoms.
  4. Wellness Programs: Implementing wellness programs that focus on physical and mental well-being can be beneficial. These programs can include activities like yoga, mindfulness training, or access to counselling services to support employees during this transitional phase.
  5. Supportive Work Environment: Creating a culture of support and understanding is crucial. Encouraging open communication and providing a safe space for employees to discuss their experiences can help reduce stigma and foster a supportive work environment.
  6. Employee Assistance Programs: Offering access to employee assistance programs or resources that provide information, counselling, or support groups specific to menopause can be valuable for employees seeking guidance and assistance.

It is important for workplaces to recognise that menopause is a natural part of life and to provide the necessary support and accommodations to ensure employees can continue to thrive in their careers during this time.
