From Stress to Success: Rethinking the Senior Interview

At senior level, interviews carry a different weight.

They’re not simply a conversation about experience – they’re a moment of evaluation, where organisations are assessing capability, judgement, and future impact. For candidates, this calls for a more deliberate approach: moving beyond simply recounting experience to clearly demonstrating how their track record translates into relevant, tangible impact within a specific organisational context.

At the start of the year, Aspen People were delighted to host a Senior Interview Masterclass in partnership with Hanover Talent Solutions, designed to support professionals in approaching the interview process with greater clarity, confidence, and strategic focus.

The webinar was led by Victoria McLean, CEO of Hanover Talent Solutions and a recognised expert in executive careers. Drawing on her experience as a former recruiter, Victoria shared practical insights and techniques on how to shape your narrative, understand your audience, and demonstrate value in a way that resonates.

This starts with a mindset shift.

Being deliberate about how experience is framed, what is emphasised, and how each response contributes to a wider, coherent narrative aligned to organisational priorities. Crucially, this narrative isn’t left to chance. It is owned, guided, and reinforced throughout the conversation. The most effective candidates don’t walk through their CV – they shape a story that clearly demonstrates relevance, impact, and alignment, while also responding to the underlying intent behind each question.

Beyond content, how you show up is equally important.

A strong executive presence involves communicating with both authority, and authenticity, and the ability to manage pressure, communicate with assurance, and establish rapport early on all shape how your message is understood and received. The session explored practical ways to strengthen these areas, using proven interview techniques such as the STAR method.

The key takeaway? Candidates who succeed are those who can clearly demonstrate not just what they’ve achieved, but the meaningful and tangible value they can deliver next.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, asked thoughtful questions, and shared their experiences. We host a new session each month and would be delighted to have you join us for an upcoming webinar.
