The Roslin Institute is a world-renowned centre for animal bioscience within the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies at the University of Edinburgh. Our mission is to achieve sustainable agriculture, control diseases and enhance health. As one of eight Institutes sponsored by the Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council, we conduct world-class research that delivers to national and global strategic needs and deliver societal and economic impact by translating our discoveries. We also nurture the careers of researchers, technical specialists and entrepreneurs and act as a collaborative hub by sharing our infrastructure, expertise and resources.
The Virology division comprises staff and students that make significant contributions to understanding viral replication, tropism and pathogenesis. It is complemented by diverse disciplines at Roslin, for example to study the genetic basis of resistance to viral infection via the application of quantitative genetics and gene editing or silencing. In collaboration with epidemiologists, it defines the nature and consequences of viral evolution and transmission pathways and with immunologists studies the basis of natural and vaccine-mediated immunity. Principal Investigators and Tenure-Track Fellows each receive core funding to appoint a staff scientist in their team as well as an annual consumable allowance and the opportunity to bid for intramural funding from a variety of sources.
The Division benefits from state-of-the-art laboratory and animal facilities. These include facilities to study animal and zoonotic viruses in their natural hosts, for example via the National Avian Research Facility for poultry (https://www.ed.ac.uk/roslin/national-avian-research-facility), Large Animal & Research Imaging Facility for pigs, cattle and sheep (https://www.ed.ac.uk/roslin/facilities-resources/larif), Aquaculture Genetics Research Facility for fish and shellfish (https://www.ed.ac.uk/roslin/aquaculture/research-aquaria/aquaculture-genetics-research-facility ), and Biological Resources Facility for rodents. This creates an exceptional environment for research and training, with around 100 doctoral students at the time of writing. The Institute offers cutting-edge equipment for bioimaging (including confocal, super-resolution, light sheet and electron microscopy), high throughput flow cytometry, genomics (including in-house single cell sequencing), and high resolution proteomics and metabolomics
