Introduction
SRUC is a unique, place-based tertiary institution with a global reach, providing excellence in teaching, research and consultancy. Formed in 2012 following the merger of the Scottish Agricultural College with the regional colleges of Barony, Elmwood and Oatridge, our history stretches back more than a century. We are quite unlike any other institution, with a tertiary education model (from FE to PhD), a world-class research base, knowledge exchange and consultancy services. Therefore, we are uniquely placed to respond to the global challenges facing us collectively, and we have the strength, courage and audacity to do it.
At SRUC, we believe in the power of collaboration between government, business, academia, and communities – a synergy that catalyses growth and resilience.
By placing an unwavering emphasis on entrepreneurial skills and fostering an environment where innovation thrives, SRUC is leading the charge to create a sustainable, dynamic, and inclusive economic future for Scotland.
In 2024, we became the first Scottish education provider in almost two decades to gain Taught Degree Awarding Powers (TDAP). Our new degrees will represent all that is at SRUC’s core: sustainability, rural and environmental expertise, giving students an unrivalled all-round educational experience and producing a workforce with the skills to drive a green economy and strategic collaboration.
SRUC is in the top 5 in the UK for studying animal science and agriculture in the Guardian University rankings and, in 2024, it was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize – the highest form of national recognition open to educational institutions in the UK – for the second time. In 2024 we also launched Scotland’s first school of Veterinary Medicine in 150 years and the UK’s first tertiary Vet school.
This is a pivotal and exciting moment for SRUC as we launch our new strategy for 2026-2031 that builds on degree awarding powers, outstanding translational research prowess and a vibrant commercial subsidiary that is well positioned for significant growth.
The Chair of the Board opening presents an opportunity to become involved and contribute to the future success of an organisation of strategic national importance at a period of exceptional change within the Tertiary Education Sector and the natural economy in Scotland and beyond.
