About Sabhal Mor Ostaig

Sabhal Mòr Ostaig has a unique learning environment.  Our courses and the College are all delivered through the medium of Gaelic – the only College of its kind in Scotland and in the world.  The College is based in Sleat on the Isle of Skye, an area renowned for its natural beauty.  The College was established in 1973 and since then has gained a worldwide reputation as a Centre for the Gaelic Language and Culture.  It is a specialist college, offering higher education, further education and research opportunities. Sabhal Mòr Ostaig recognises the importance of a strong foundation for the language, culture and the arts and is involved in many projects to take this forward.

Aims of the College

Sabhal Mòr Ostaig aims to be a center of academic excellence at the heart of developments in the Gaelic language and culture by providing high quality education, training and research opportunities through the medium of Gaelic and by engaging strategically together with others, business and the community as a whole to promote social, cultural and economic development. The College is an all-Gaelic educational institution and an all-Gaelic place of business, with the preservation, promotion and expansion of the Gaelic language as the primary purpose of the College.
