Chief Operating Officer (Depute)

Welcome

Dear prospective candidate,

Thank you for considering the role of Chief Operating Officer. This is a key member of the executive and wider senior leadership team at Edinburgh College that will report directly to me.

The Chief Operating Officer is the Executive owner of the College’s operational, financial and organisational performance – and as Depute will act with full delegated authority for myself as required over staffing, finance, governance reporting and emergency decision-making.

Whoever takes on this role will provide strategic leadership in all aspects of operational excellence and encourage a workplace that rallies together to solve challenges, is people focused, highly collaborative and shares a deep commitment to being the very best we can.

You will work alongside peers who are driven and passionate about our College and the impact we have, changing people’s lives and supporting the economic development of our region.

This is an incredibly exciting time to be joining Edinburgh College. We’re the largest College in Scotland and responsible for over 10% of all of Scotland’s college activity. Each year we help tens of thousands of learners reach their educational goals – with a sector-leading completion rates and 97% of students going on to a positive destination.

Based across four campuses, including three in the city, we’re at the heart of the Edinburgh community and serve a population of over 730,000 across the region we operate in.

We’re at the centre of the business community here in the capital as well – working with around 2,000 businesses to help understand their needs and ensure that we’re providing the skills they need not just for now, but for into the future as well.

And as you’d expect for a College of our size and stature – we have an international outlook in a lot of the work we do.

Each year we welcome thousands of international students from over 135 countries around the world to come here and study with us – and over the past few years we’ve carried out projects across five continents which has helped us cement our reputation as one of the UK’s most internationally active colleges.

There are undoubtedly challenges that we will face in the coming years – with finances continuing to be constrained and the needs of our local communities growing and changing.

However, we have a tremendous track record of tackling these issues head on and carrying out sector leading work to change and develop our offering. It is with this in mind that we recently started the early stages of our transformation plan – a three-year journey where our ambition is to make our college fit for the future and to exemplify the potential of the college sector as a whole.

Key to the success of this project is our amazing team of over 1,000 staff members here at the college. The successful candidate for this role will be surrounded by committed and supportive colleagues across our institution, and is expected to provide inspirational leadership while supporting the development of a culture based on our shared values.

If you think that person could be you, and you have the skills, values and experience to take on this challenging and rewarding role, we would welcome your application.

Kind regards,

Audrey Cumberford
